I was recently contacted by
Robert Llewelyn Wright who drew my attention to the
connections between the Gaubert, Wright and Frieake families.
Consequently I am extremely grateful to him for his information and
many interesting related photographs. Robert's contribution
concerns the senior branch of the present Gaubert family, currently
headed by Roger Gaubert, but at one time by Percival Stephen
Gaubert born in 1881. Percival married Ethel Frieake and they were the
parents of Peter Gaubert (born 191) and Stephen George Gaubert (born
1915). Without Robert's help, most of the remaining branches of the
Gaubert family would have remained unaware of the Frieake association.
Robert is the grandson
of Bessie Prui Wright (nee Frieake) and
Clarence Sinclair Darwin Bryce
Wright.
Bessie was
the sister of Ethel May Frieake who married Percival Stephen Gaubert in
1913. In detail, Clarence
Sinclair Darwin Bryce Wright was
born on the 30th
Nov
1882 at 54
Guilford Road,
St Georges,Bloomsbury.
He was the 2nd
son of Bryce McMurdo & Emma Sarah Louisa (known as 'May')
Wright and nee
Crouch. She died 20th
Feb 1929. Clarence
married Bessie Prui (2nd
daughter of George
Roberts Minter &
Clara Frieake nee Theis) on Saturday 1st June
1912 at St Johns Church
Wembley where Percy Gaubert (the Percival Stephen
Gaubert born in 1881) was
'Best Man' and
Ethel May Frieake (sister of Bessie Prui) and Beryl May Wright were
bridesmaids.
Just a stone’s throw away from the church and just down the
road from the Wembley Stadium, was the Frieake family home
at 'The Chestnuts' in Byron
Road.
Sadly 'The Chestnuts' is no longer there but Byron Road
remains. The land that Great-Grandfather Frieake had was sold up and
there are
now
about 60 -yes 60-houses on
the
patch!!
Clarence
& Bessie had 3 children –
- Clarence
Minter Sinclair Bryce Wright 1916-1996
- George
Llewelyn Wright 1922-1985
- Rosemary

Wright 1928-2007
Clarence
senior was awarded the
‘Croix de Guerre’ by the
French Government in 1918 following a WW1 career in the Royal Navy
during which
time he was involved in dozens of mine-laying operations and rose to
the rank
of Commander on 20th June 1927 in the Royal Navy Reserve. He later
served with
P & O as Chief Officer on many ships and which included the
Naldera (where
he was Master and on which, uncannily, some Gaubert family members are
recorded at Page 3.55 as being aboard as passengers in 1924. Again
remarkably co-incidental, between 1924-1930 he was Chief Officer on the
'Moldavia'
during which period, in 1925, other Gaubert family members travelled as
passengers. Clarence died on 20th
Jan 1945 and Bessie died on 11th Nov
1960.
Clarence Minter
Sinclair Bryce Wright, on the death of his
father, and the subsequent re-marriage of his mother to George Roberts
Minter
Frieake, moved to ‘The Chestnuts’ in Byron Road so joined the
Frieake family thus making a total of 8 children - 4 boys and
4
girls.
Below is a table of photos of Robert's family history that includes
Percy Gaubert & Ethel Frieake and of 'The Chestnuts'
