The Freedom Records of the City of London
(Chamberlain's Court, Guildhall 1681 - 1915 and Goldsmiths Hall)

1. Stephen GAUBERT became free of the Goldsmiths Company in March 1796, of Litchfield Street, son of Peter GAUBERT of George Court, Doctors Common, who was apprenticed in 1783 to John Jefferson, jeweller of Fleet Street. Stephen later moved to Carlisle Street and Berwick Street. His maker's mark was ' SG ' in a rectangular shield. The book 'London Goldsmiths 1200-1800' (Guildhall Library) corroborates this information adding that Stephen was at the Litchfield Street address from 1796-1800. In the map below, look at Bennet Hill running southwards from St Paul's Church Yard down towards the River Thames. Just above the letter 'T' of 'Bennet' look immediately to the west, or left, and you will see George Court which appears to comprise 8 properties.
