'SUICIDE OF A CLERK IN THE CITY.  On Friday afternoon, at the City Coroner’s Court, an inquest was held by Mr. Langham on Frank Gaubert, aged 22, a clerk, of College Street, Islington.— Sidney Gaubert, brother of deceased, said the latter was in good health, and there was nothing to lead him to take his life. He had a revolver which he carried about loaded. He told witness that he got it for self-defence in case he was attacked.—Louis Schnessier, clerk to Dumas, Uyley, and Co., Lombard Street, said deceased came to business at the usual time on Wednesday morning. Just before one o’clock deceased went to the lavatory, and some time after witness happened to go there, and was horrified to find the deceased lying on the threshold dead. There was a pool of blood on the floor, and witness saw a bullet wound in the temple. Witness knew he was in the habit of carrying the revolver about with him, but he had never heard him threaten to commit suicide, and, as far as he was aware, there was nothing to lead him to destroy himself.—The jury returned a verdict of “Suicide while temporarily insane.”  '

Henry Frederick GAUBERT-
born 1832, although IGI says 12th Jul 1838, and then bapt.08 Nov 1838 in St Petersburg, Russia. He was the son of John Peter GAUBERT & Elizabeth MANNERS. He was an officer in the Russian Army (Hall's notes re Tatiana). He married Lizzie (Eliza Wood - see below).

In October 1859 the 39th Foot, Dorsetshire Regiment moved to Bermuda, where the only distraction - and that a relatively small one - was the American Civil War. In 1860 he purchased an Ensign post in the 39th Foot, Dorsetshire Regiment. In 1862 he joined the regiment in Bermuda. You'll find a newspaper report of his participation in a yacht race. Bermuda was a sleepy Wooky Hollow for much of this period. In 1864, the year that the Regiment returned from Bermuda to to England and Aldershot (where, in response to the evident need for post-Crimea Army reform, proper training facilities were at last provided) Henry purchased a Lieutenant post in the 39th Foot.

The 39th, however, made only a short first stay at Aldershot, moving to Dover in August 1865. February 1866 brought a move to Manchester with two companies detached to Newcastle-on-Tyne, which shifted to Weedon in July, and two companies to Chester. These all rejoined headquarters in time for the presentation on September 8th, 1866, of new Colours. On November 30th the Regiment had the honor of finding two Guard of Honour when Queen Victoria visited Wolverhamption, and three days later it left Manchester for Belfast, Ireland. Landing on December 5th, headquarters and three companies proceeded to Enniskillen, four companies to Newry and three to Armagh. The Fenians were agitating Ireland and the 'civil power' was constantly requiring assistance, involving several shifts of station for the outlying companies. In August however, the whole Regiment was transferred to Dublin where it remained until April 1868, then moving to the South.

Henry retired from the Regiment in 1867. It appears, particularly from the photos, that he then rejoined the family in Russia.

right: See here for Henry's horseracing results in Ireland. Templemore Steeplechases, at Thurles, Ireland on Monday April 22nd. 1861. Henry, of the 39th Regt., is shown as a Steward. He had a 3rd. place in The Town Plate, a selling race, with his horse Czar. He also had a 3rd place with Czar the following day in The Hunt Cup.
