In the Spring of 1998 I visited a village named GAUBERT which is just a few kms south of Digne on the western edge of the southern French Alps. Now it is just a hamlet but does contain the ruins of a chateau. It is sited on the spine of a hill. The highest point being the church, which contains a unique feature of burial tombs, cut in the rock for both adults and infants. The Maitre de Ville explained that at some indeterminate time in the past, Huguenots had controlled the village but they had been ousted. There is no evidence that this village is directly connected with the family name. We chose to visit it as part of a long weekend excursion to a very scenic area of France.
