This section was created as a consequence of recent research of the Labat family in Ireland. This showed that an Andre Labat married a Susanne Gaubert and that in his will he bequeathed to her the rent from property in Utrecht. Co-incidentally, the IGI recently included Gauberts recorded in The Netherlands. It may be that prior to our association with William, Prince of Orange and his forces at The Battle of The Boyne, we arrived in the UK from The Netherlands rather than directly from France. Some of the IGI records are of events at the Waals Hervormde Kerk in Amsterdam so here are is a modern photograph and an old print.

The church originally formed part of the convent of St. Paul’s which was located behind the Oudezijds Achterburgwal, near the present Oude Hoogstraat. The convent was founded in 1409; the chapel was consecrated in 1496. When a Protestant local government assumed power in 1578, the chapel was confiscated. The building was used as storage space and charity institution until the French Huguenots who had fled to Amsterdam were allowed the use of the building in 1586. Religious services were in French from then on and the name Waalse (Walloon) Kerk or ‘Walenkerck’, as the older form of the name reads, became current. North of the former convent a small gate, designed by Hendrick de Keyser, was incorporated in the row of houses in 1616, allowing easy access to the church. The skulls decorating the gate refer to the funerals which once took place here.

The Reformed community consisted of French Protestants (so-called Huguenots) who had fled France and the area which is now called Belgium, in order to escape from the terror constituted by the Catholic government. The former chapel consisted of a nave and a single aisle, along the north wall, and soon proved too small to accommodate the needs of the growing Huguenot community. In 1661, therefore, an additional aisle was built along the south wall, giving the church its current shape. The present three-aisled church has round pillars with octagonal capitals (the foliage was removed at a later stage) supporting a wooden barrel vault. The later addition was conscientiously designed to form a perfect match with the original Gothic chapel. The Classicistic gate on the Walenpleintje dates back to 1647.

As part of the 1885 renovation, the facade on the Walenpleintje was done up in neo-Renaissance style. Large cracks in the facade soon showed the bad quality of the work. The situation was worsened by the installation of a concrete floor in the 1960s. The 1991 restoration successfully remedied the problems.

The organ dates back to 1680. The famous organ builder Christian Müller renovated the instrument in 1734. It is not an exaggeration to say that this is the best kept Müller organ.
