I am very grateful to David Whitford, formerly a member of the congregation of the Anglican Church in St Petersburg, Russia. He has provided me with information from local research undertaken by staff from the Pushkin Apartment Museum. It concerns possibly John Peter Gaubert's engraving skills which are recorded on 44 images found on the Russian national records website at https://bit.ly/2JtOBaw. David advises that which of the Gauberts created the engravings is still unclear, as no first name is given for the work (& the person who created them would have studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St Petersburg in the early/mid-1820s). Hopefully, the document in the Russian Historical Archive, that is being researched will give a bit more information/a name.
The ship 'Ann-Gales' set out from London in 1834 for St. Petersburg, but was shipwrecked on 21st October 1834 in the Texel, North Holland. All on board were rescued. Amongst the cargo were part of the steel sheets bearing the engravings with the plans and views of St Petersburg. These plates were either made by or produced for John Peter Gaubert.
I was aware that John Peter Gaubert had been apprenticed as an engraver/silver engraver but presumed this concerned jewellery. John Peter GAUBERT, the son of George GAUBERT & Sarah HARRIS, was born on the 3rd March 1794. He was baptised on the 7th December 1794 at St Annes, Soho. In 1808 he was apprenticed to a goldsmith. JPG was also a founder member of The Baltic Exchange in London. John’s brother George Frederick Gaubert was recorded in 1839 as being a stationer and engraver of 119, Chancery Lane, London. He went on to become a significant watercolour artist (see http://www.gaubertgenealogy.freeola.org/PaintingsbyGeorgeFrederickGaubert.html) I have two of his paintings. He exhibited some 28 paintings at the Royal Academy and Suffolk Street between 1829 - 1861
