Taken largely from the following websites - www.londonlives.org, ancestry.co.uk, findmypast.co.uk, familysearch.org

The following tables are from the London Lives project. Some, such as fire insurance, are already included in other pages on this site. The workhouse records paint a very sad picture of the fortunes of Peter & Ann Gaubert, among our earliest-proven ancestors. Initially I wondered why they had fallen so far when a family 'lifeboat' of contemporary close relatives was around them.

Settlement Examinations form the most common surviving type of examination. The idea of a settlement was enshrined in law with the passage of An Act for the better Relief of the Poor in 1662, widely referred as the Act of Settlement.1 This Act was principally concerned with restricting migration and providing the basis for the exclusion of outsiders from parishes. Those immigrants thought "likely to be chargeable" to a parish could be removed under the Act’s auspices by order, if a complaint was brought against them within forty days of their arrival, always providing that they had not rented a house or land worth £10 per year or more, or provided a certificate attesting to their intention to undertake harvest work, or their normal residence elsewhere.

Peter & Ann GAUBERT- http://www.londonlives.org
Ann Gaubert, pauper admitted to St. Martins Workhouse 3.7.1811 aged 64 with her husband Peter Gaubert also a pauper. Removed with husband on 10.7.1811 to the parish of Lambeth.

Peter and Ann had 15 children amongst whom were Stephen, born in 1769 and who died in 1834, and Edward, born in 1785 and died in 1832.

A Stephen Gaubert is recorded as having a house in Litchfield Street in 1774 and again in 1780. He might have been the Stephen, son of Peter. But he died shortly afterwards, when in 1782, his will proven.

Within a few years, in 1791, Peter's cousin Edward dies as 'a widower of Dublin' and his will is proven. Edward's estate, although originally intended for his mother, passes to his father David. David deserted his wife Sarah, she being the poor woman sent to St. Martins Workhouse back in 1780. In 1796 another Stephen Gaubert, but also of Litchfield Street and therefore presumably Peter's grandson, votes for John Home Tooke in the Westminster election.

So at the turn of the century, Peter has lost his father and his Aunt Sarah had been put into the Workhouse 20 years earlier. Her husband Uncle David had already deserted her many years earlier. But Peter, having also lost his cousin Edward, does have the two sons, Stephen and Edward.

Early in the new century, in 1802 and 1806, that same first-mentioned Stephen is shown as still living in Litchfield Street. On the 3rd July 1811 Peter and his wife Ann, both aged 64, are put into St. Martins Workhouse for a week and then transferred to Lambeth Workhouse. Ann dies 7 months.

Westminster Archives confirmed to me that this destination wasn't a matter of choice. The Act of Settlement proscribed where paupers and vagrants should be taken - normally to their last permanent parish. Initially this transfer was a surprise, given Peter's childhood connection with Westminster but old addresses webpage shows the direct connection -

1783 Edward GAUBERT of Castle Street, son of Peter GAUBERT of Union Street, Lambeth, Surrey, who was apprenticed in 1783 to John Jefferson of Fetter Lane. Jefferson appears in the London Poll Book of 1768 as an armourer & brazier, of Holborn

1801 - Richard Gaubert is recorded in the census as an inmate of St. James Workhouse.

1806 Edward GAUBERT of Castle Street, son of Peter GAUBERT of Union Street, Lambeth, Surrey, who was apprenticed in 1783 to john Jefferson of Fetter Lane.

1806 Became free of the Goldsmiths Company in November 1806. Edward GAUBERT of Castle Street, son of Peter GAUBERT of Union Street, Lambeth, Surrey, who was apprenticed in 1783 to John Jefferson of Fetter Lane. Edward later moved to 6, Serles Place.

1816 26.11. Peter GAUBERT, died aged 71 yrs of Serles Place.

Stephen Gaubert is shown a few years later in 1818 and 1819 as still being

So , there were some surprises. Edward leaves almost all of his estate to his mother Sarah and nothing to his father David who survives him and inherits the lot. Peter and Ann clearly moved for some reason from Lambeth to Westminster for a few years but desperately struggled and were returned to Lambeth. Eventually Peter was to make it back across the Thames, eventually to live with his son Edward at Serles Place, Holborn, a turning north of Fleet Street. It's comforting to see Peter finding eventual safety in his son's house.

Both sons (they each survived him) seemed to have failed to give their parents a safety net when they so desperately needed one. The Workhouse was normally the last step before the grave yet both sons were working tradesmen.
