1782 22nd Aug. Stephen GAUBERT
Made 1st Aug. 1774 in Middx. A Chaser. Wife Margaret nee Stour , nephew Peter; godson Stephen and goddaughter Elizabeth who are the children of Peter. Nephew Edward and niece Elizabeth the children of David GAUBERT. Brother David and nephew John. Stephen GAUBERT of Harpenden found Stephen and Margaret's marriage, by licence, in the records of St. Anne's, Soho, dated 28th. August 1762, conducted by Henry Lyatt, Curate. She was from the parish of St. Peter the Poor. He also established that there were no GAUBERT marriages at St. Anne's during Jan 1738 - Dec. 1748 inc., nor at St. Martins for June 1750 - Oct.1753, and no GAUBERT births at St. Anne's for Mar.1722 - Aug. 1727 other than that of Lewis John GAUBERT. From this the following plan:

The above plan can easily accomodate the belief that David and his wife Sarah are the same couple shown in the St Martin’s Fleet marriages where on the 9th May 1751 David Gaubert, batchelor, dyer married Sarah Jennings, spinster (see Addendum)

In Memory of Corporal EDWARD ARTHUR GAUBERT who died age 25 on Thursday 25 December 1941.Corporal GAUBERT, Son of Mr. and Mrs. E. V. Gaubert, of Bearsden, Dunbartonshire, Scotland . Remembered with honour SAI WAN MEMORIAL

RG -Bob Massey who researches the Hong Kong Defence Force Unit, contacted me for further information on Edward. He advises that Edward Gaubert worked for Jardine Matheson in Hong Kong in the 1930s and like many fit young men working in the colony at that time, he joined the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corp. This was very similar to the British TA and was the main defence for Hong Kong at the time but had an active social side as well. After training he transferred to the Machine Gun Company and after the formation of the Air Unit in 1934, applied to receive training as a pilot with this section. In 1937 he was accepted and became a student pilot with the Air Unit. Members of the Air Unit retained membership of their original units as well as being members of the Air Unit so received two lots of training. They also retained their rank that at this time for Edward Gaubert was Corporal. As a result of this arrangement the Unit ended with pilots with ranks of private upwards, the only air unit in the world known to do this. At the start of the war in 1939 he was living in the Jardine company-bungalow at 287, Prince Edward Rd Hong Kong and, being long established in the colony, had been put on the Jury List to serve in the Hong Kong courts. When the Japanese attacked in Dec 1941 they destroyed the aircraft of the Air Unit in the first raid on the Airfield at Kai Tak and Air Unit were therefore unable to take an active part in the following battle as an airborne force. The members of the Air Unit therefore served with their other units, in Edward's case, the Machine Gun Company (who were initially employed in the defence of the airfield at Kai Tak which was the only viable air strip in the colony). According to a letter from Harry A Penn (Edward's commanding officer at the time) to the widow of one of his other men the following is a record of Edward's death. By the 24th December the eastern part of Hong Kong Island defence had been beaten back and cornered in the Stanley peninsula with the Japanese pushing into the narrow neck of the isthmus. Harry Penn himself had been wounded on the 21st and was in hospital. His company had suffered heavy casualties and had only one officer remaining. It was then re-organised under a company of the Middlesex Regiment. One platoon of this mixed company under the command of Lt Scantlebury and including Edward Gaubert was holding the Mary Knoll Mission, a large building to the landward side of the isthmus. During the night of the 24th/25th the Japanese infiltrated in considerable numbers through the lines and past the Mary Knoll Mission. In the early morning just before daylight Lt Scantlebury decided to endeavour to withdraw his party back through the neck of the peninsula to rejoin the main defence line. He split the party into 3 sections of 7 or 8 men each to make its own way back through the Japanese lines. The first 2 parties got through with little trouble but the last section with Edward Gaubert, Lt Scantlebury, and John Potter and Lowry of the HFVDF were ambushed and all the party killed. The Japanese buried the bodies and Edward's last resting place is now in Saiwan Bay cemetery Hong Kong . It would appear that the recorded date of his death is wrong as from this letter it was the morning of 25th December 1941 not the 21st. His parents are recorded as living in Bearsden, Dunbartonshire , Scotland.

RG - I recently found the following on the internet -

'From Geoffrey Lambert

My parents were living in Hong Kong before the war. My mother brother, and I were evacuated to Australia in September 1940. My father William (Bill) Lambert stayed on as he was working for E.D. Sassoons. He joined the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps about this time. After the Japanese invasion in December 1942 it was quite a long time before my mother found out what had happened to my father, that he was killed on the last day of the fighting. It was not until January 1946 that she received a letter from Harry Penn, his Company Commander, describing the events of that time.

This is a copy of the letter sent by Harry Penn to Mrs Lambert who was then at Flat 2, 265 St Kilda St , Middle Brighton, Melbourne.

Filey Brigg, 352 London Road, North Cheam,20th January 1946

My Dear Mrs. Lambert,
I was very glad to get your letter of the 9th as I have been trying to get your address since my return a month ago – in fact I wrote to the Colonial Office some time ago for addresses of next-of-kin of all members of my Company killed in Hong Kong, so that I could give them such additional information as I have, but they have not even replied. The unavoidable uncertainty and lack of definite information over the last four years must have made the loss of your husband even more anxious and worrying matter than would otherwise have been the case and I would like to tender you my sincere sympathy in the loss you have sustained. I will endeavour to give what you such information as I can – I was wounded myself on the 21st Dec and I can only speak from information given me in response to enquiries regarding subsequent happenings. By the 24th Dec, the Eastern part of the defence of the island had been beaten back and cornered in the Stanley Peninsula with the Nips pushing forward into the narrow neck of the isthmus. My company had suffered heavy casualties and had only one officer remaining and in its depleted form was re-organized under the command of the remainder of a Company of the Middlesex Regt. A Platoon of our Company, under an officer of the Middlesex, named Scantlebury, was holding the Mary Knoll Mission, which you may remember as a large building on the landward side of the isthmus

Your husband was with this platoon. During the night of 24th/25th Dec the Japanese infiltrated in considerable numbers through our lines and past the Mary Knoll Mission and in the morning, just before daylight, Lt. Scantlebury decided to endeavour to withdraw the party back through the "neck" of the peninsula and rejoin the main defence line. He split the party into three sections of seven or eight each and each section was to find its own way back through the infiltrated Japanese forces., quite rightly hoping that three small parties would have a better chance of getting through than if they withdrew together. The last of the three parties to leave was one of seven with Lt Scantlebury and your husband was with this party. The first two parties got through safely with comparatively few casualties, although they passed through very heavy machine gun and mortar fire in the narrow confines of the isthmus. I am sorry to say that none of the third party got through and it can only be concluded that they were ambushed by the Japanese when making their way back and the whole section wiped out, probably by machine gun fire. Among those who were lost with this section, and whom you may possibly know, were John Potter of Leigh & Orange, Gaubert of Jardines, Lowry the Magistrate and with whom I think your husband was fairly friendly. Some two days after our surrender, a burial party was allowed out of Stanley Fort but were unfortunately unable to get as far as the area in which this party was caught and consequently, as far as I know, there is no record of the burial place of any of these men. No record was kept by the Japanese of those that they subsequently buried, so as far as I know. I am so sorry that I can give you no more definite information than the foregoing rather unsatisfactory details but I am afraid that there is no one who can do so.

Although the hostilities in H.K. were of such short duration, our company saw some of the stiffest fighting and are generally acknowledged to have put up a very creditable show – unfortunately our casualties in killed alone represented nearly one third of the Company strength. It seems such a pity that so many died on the last day of the fighting, and when the end was so obviously near. Our Company started operations on the mainland as local defence of the Kai Tak aerodrome and came in for the initial Jap bombing and machine gunning of the aerodrome on the first morning of hostilities and we were among the last troops to evacuate to the island. Thereafter we were involved in the hills behind Taikoo after another sharp engagement in the vicinity of the Tytam Crossroads and the Simmons Bungalow, "Erinville", and it was there that I collected a bullet through the face but which fortunately did no damage. Your husband was beside me at the time working a Lewis Gun and that was the last time I saw him.

Apart from volunteering, he was a personal friend of mine and he, Vyner Gordon, Bowker and I used to pay quite a bit of tennis together – it is awful to think that they have all gone. During our short war, the men did have to put up with a considerable amount of privation and hardship. Naturally, I saw quite a bit of you husband during that period and I can only assure you that through it all, in his quiet way, he maintained the utmost philosophy and cheerfulness.

Please accept my very sincere sympathy with yourself and your two sons in your loss, which is no doubt unhappily revived at this time when so many of us have been fortunate enough to be reunited with our wives and families.

Yours very sincerely, Harry A Penn

This letter does not relate the circumstances which saved Harry Penn. His son, John Penn, records that my father (AHP) was wounded on 21st December 1941 and ended up in the Field Hospital at St Stephen's, Stanley . He was remarkably fortunate having been shot through the face, with the bullet entering his right cheek and exiting through the left, without touching tooth! The next bit of good fortune was that he discharged himself (swathed in bandages) on 24th December, and returned to No 1 Company HKVDF somewhere in the Stanley area. In the early hours of Christmas Day, the enemy broke into the hospital bayoneting the wounded, killing the doctors and raping and killing the nurses. There were few survivors.'

Hi Henk

Wing Commander Hervey (Henry) George Fradgley Gaubert DFC was killed in an aircraft crash on the 24th of March 1944. He had been appointed Air Attache, British Legion in Bogata,Columbia. Authorization was given for him to proceed to Washington, D.C. to ferry a Beechcraft (Expeditor?) back to Bogata to be used for official purposes by the Air Attache.

On the morning of the 24th at 09:06 hours, Gaubert and four passengers departed Bolling Field (Washington, D.C.) for Bogata. Gaubert’s aircraft was refueled at Charleston Army Airfield, South Carolina. The aircraft departed and failed to reach its destination. On the 25th, wreckage was discovered along the shoreline at St. Simons Island of Brunswick, Georgia. Cheers…Chris

From Phil Butler c/o Air Britain Information Exchange

"I believe the aircraft concerned was HB182, which was purchased on the UK dollar account for delivery to Colombia and use by the British Air Attache, and which crashed on its delivery flight."

The note Chris posted said 4 passengers plus pilot.. We are missing 1 name!!

PS

Bob Parmerter (author of "Beech 18 A Civil & Military History") adds on AB-iX

"Just to add a little to Phil's information, it was Expediter I, HB182, AAF 43-35620 Beech c/n 6124 that had been delived new to Bolling Fld 7Mar44 for deliv to the Air Attache for Colombia. I will have to reexamine the AAF aircraft record card to clarify which air attache."

Posted by Henk Welting (Guest) on 23-Mar-07 at 04:58PM Paul: Thanks for info on the possible serial number. Listed by AB without unit; crashed on delivery flight and SOC 31.1.45. Yes, we're missing one name; AHB/RAF will have the info but they no longer answer my questions (BTW I send them just eight letters each containing one case, during a two year period.).Have a good weekend, Henk.

Henk, If there was a fifth person on this a/c, probably not W.A.A. F.

The casualty list in the Times, 22 June 1944 shows Gaubert, Williams, Bushby and Shelly "missing, believed killed". The two women are the only names appearing in the W.A.A.F. casualty section.

Same four are "now presumed killed" in the 24 January 1945 list. Again, Bushby & Shelly are the only two names appearing in the W.A.A.F. section.

And finally, the only four names on the Ottawa Memorial with date of death 24 March 1944 are the four named above.

Thanks Ken for this info. Two W/Cdr's is not correct (Williams: S/Ldr); Gaubert the only one identified (?) could have been: recovered from the sea and 'committed to the deep'. AHB/RAF may have the final solution. Regards, Henk.

Paul: Thanks for info on the possible serial number. Listed by AB without unit; crashed on delivery flight and SOC 31.1.45.

The British Air Commission and Lend-Lease published by Air Britain confirms HB182 crashed after export en route to Colombia, though unfortuately does not give a date. I think we can assume this is the aircraft ,Paul
