From Grimwade - London Goldsmiths 1697-1837: Their Marks & Lives re GAUBERT, Stephen
(Grimwade p.378) Post by MCB » Thu Nov 08, 2012 6:22 am

Goldworkers List (Section VII).

He was christened in 1769 at St Dunstan in the West, the son of Peter and Anne. His brother was Edward Gaubert (Grimwade p.359).
He was apprenticed to his father in 1783 and free in 1796. His father was in the Goldsmiths Company and a jeweller at George Court, Doctors Commons.
He had married Mary Colley at St Anne, Soho in 1795.
Their son William Peter was christened at that church in 1796.
He appears in the London Poll Book of 1796 as a goldsmith entitled to vote by reason of property at 4 Litchfield Street, Soho, paid for Land Tax redemption in 1798 and was assessed to Land Tax there until 1806 then on property in Gerrard Street, Soho in 1807.
John George, son of Charles Bertram, a wine merchant, was indentured as his apprentice in 1801.
His son Stephen, a child late of Litchfield Street, was buried at St Anne's in 1804.
As an aside to this biography, of the 135 burials recorded in the St Anne's parish in July-September 1804, 85 were of children, a disturbing statistic.
From 1811 his son William Peter and John James Edington (Grimwade p.365, 372) were his apprentices at Litchfield Street.
His wife Mary's burial record at St Anne's in 1828 showed Litchfield Street as her last address.
He was assessed to Land Tax on property in Brewer Street from 1812 to 1829.
Three of his children, John born 1797, Ann born 1799 and Richard born 1801 were all belatedly christened at St Anne's in 1821.
He entered a mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1831 as a gold worker from 8 Carlisle Street, Soho and notified a change of address to 51 Berwick Street, Oxford Street in 1833, the only year he was assessed to Land Tax on the property.
No further Land Tax was charged on Stephen and no further information has been traced for him. He either retired or died.
Son William Peter appears in the Brewer Street records from 1835-36. He died in 1838.
Son John was listed as a working jeweller at 51 Brewer Street in 1839 and was assessed to Land Tax there from 1835 until he died in 1842. Mrs Gaubert or Gaubert & Co were assessed there from 1843 until at least 1851 at which point the website records end.
Son Richard, recorded as a jeweller, was in the St James workhouse in 1841.

fleet marriage
A Fleet Marriage is the best-known example of an irregular or a clandestine marriage taking place in England before the Marriage Act of 1753 came into force on March 25, 1754. Specifically, it was one which took place in London's Fleet Prison or its environs during the 17th and, especially, the early 18th century.

From: 'The Fleet Prison', Old and New London: Volume 2 (1878), pp. 404-416. URL: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=45111 Date accessed: 28 August 2013.

In the seventeenth and early part of the eighteenth centuries couples desiring to be secretly married came to the Fleet and King's Bench prisons, where degraded clergymen could easily be found among the herd of debtors to perform the ceremony.

The Fleet Chapel was used for debtors' marriages till 1686, when the incumbent of St. James's, Duke's Place, Aldgate, being suspended by the Commissioners for Ecclesiastical Causes, made it too popular as a place for secret marriages; and the chapel becoming the haunt of dangerouslookers-on, the degraded clergymen of the prison and neighbourhood began to celebrate secret marriages in rooms of adjoining taverns, or in private houses adjacent to Fleet Street, Ludgate Hill, and the Mint, keeping registers, to give an appearance of legality, and employing touts, to attract and bring in victims.

A few of the forty negotiators in wedlock were women, who had come into possession of a register and marrying business by inheritance. Most of them, however, had in the first instance been simple innkeepers, supplying the public with adulterated liquors before they entered the matrimonial trade.

"Standing in the chief thoroughfares or side-alleys and by-yards of the Fleet quarter, their taverns had signs, some of which still pertain to hostelries of the locality. For instance: 'The Cock,' near Fleet Bridge, and 'The Rainbow' Coffee House, at the corner of Fleet Ditch, were famous marryinghouses, with signs honourably known at the presentday to frequenters of Fleet Street taverns. The'Cock and Acorn,' the 'Fighting Cocks,' the'Shepherd and Goat,' the 'Golden Lion,' the'Bishop Blaze,' the 'Two Lawyers,' the 'Wheatsheaf,' the 'Horseshoe and Magpie,' the 'King'sHead,' the 'Lamb,' the 'Swan,' the 'Hoop and Bunch of Grapes,' were some of the taverns in or near Fleet Street and Fleet Market, provided with chaplains and chapels, or private rooms, in which marriages were solemnised on every day and night of the year.

Stephen - who married Anne Wilson on the 26th Dec. 1734 at St James's church, Bristol and should be, by geography, the same Stephen who died 7th June 1739 at Bedminster, Bristol. He is also recorded as 'Gaulert".
Stephen Andre, the son of Peter Gaubert and nephew of Stephen Gaubert who died in 1764 in Wexford
Stephen who married Frances Prince on the 27th Dec. 1739 at 'the Fleet', London although another source reports that it was at 'Wheelers'. In either case it was the same location and a clandestine marriage. He is reported as a chaser

She is recorded in the List of Prerogative Wills of Ireland 1536-1810 in which Andre's (shown as Andrew) Will is proved in 1728 and Suzanne's, of Dublin, in 1763. Ancestry.co.uk says she died 1763. Andre had previously married Chrtistine Peppard on 17th Feb 1706/7 at Kilkenny church, Portarlington.
