It is only when you examine these records that you realise our surname may not be so pure after all. Look at the variety of spelling used in some of the above records –

1. the record of 30 th July 1693 re Fallou and Falou

2.the records of 17th Sept 1693 and 21st Oct 1694 both concern the Le Challas family but our name is spelt as ‘Gobert and ‘Gobere'

3.the record of 10th March 1706, the 4th 1709 and 22nd April 1711 all concern the Rouph family but our name is spelt as ‘Gobert and ‘Goubert

4.the record of 14th June 1713 and 1st July 1713 both concern the marriage of Isaac Barbe to Jeanne ‘Gaubert and ‘ Gobert'

5.the record of 1st May 1720 and 18th May 1734 both concern Francillion but our name is spelt ‘ Goubert and ‘Goubar'

6.the record of 28th July 1723 and the record of 11th Oct 1730 shows the name ‘Goubard' and ‘Wilbeau'.

7.the record of 2nd Nov 1735 and 8th Jan 1738 both concern Susanne who has a maiden surname of ‘Wilbau' and ‘Willebau' and a child called either ‘ Goubar' or 'Goubart'.

8.the record of 11th Feb 1732 which shows the name ‘Vilbeau' is almost certainly connected.

From the above church register extracts and the IGI records, the various spellings produce the following list -

A.

begins ends no. of records
GOBER 1682 1880 1 214 in IGI, inc 8 in UK 1881 Census, & 26 in UK IGI 1608-1880

GOUBAUD 1732 1890 1 6 in IGI but none in UK
GUBERT 1681 1784 1 in UK IGI in 1784 & 10 in France

What do these records indicate ? Firstly that ‘George Manners GAUBART is ‘GAUBERT. Secondly, the A list of ‘GOBER, ‘GOBERT, ‘GOBART, ‘GOUBERT and ‘GAUBERT, but excepting ‘ GOUBER, were the only ones (although 'GOUBERT' was almost entirely confined to Jersey) with the genealogical legs to survive into the 1881 Census. ‘GAUBER, although only one letter short of our name, does not by examination of the IGI, appear to be a mistake for ‘GAUBERT.

The A list suggests that each name has sufficient numbers to have survived in its own right and is not a corruption although some entries may be misspellings.

The B list is the middling ground of uncertainty. ‘GOUBART and ‘GOUBARD have legs in the parish registers and IGI but, most importantly, they haven't survived into modern times. At least they haven't managed to parallel the continuous line that ‘GAUBERT has maintained. I still think that this list does need more research.

The C list, save for ‘ GAUBE which seems to be almost entirely confined to Western Europe and the USA, are probably misspellings of one or more of those names on the A & B lists.

The first record I have yet found of a GAUBERT in England is from the Huguenot Society and is in 1619 when Philipe GAUBERT acted as a sponsor to Benjamin de l'Escury at the Walloon Church of Norwich. Then an extract of baptisms recorded in the parish records of St. Johns Halifax refers to Phebe baptised in November 1670. The parent is referred to as Jo. (John?) Gaubert. Whilst in The Guildhall Library in London, from a copy of The Clockmaker's Company Freeman, I found a record of 'James GOUBERT (French) B. 29th Sept 1690' (where B means being made a Brother).

Stephen GAUBERT of Harpenden said that whilst researching the records of St. Anne's, Soho he found an entry, albeit faint, for the birth of Lewis John GAUBER (NB - I can't trace this in the parish records, the IGI or Huguenot Society records) on the 20th. April 1724, the son of Peter and Elizabeth (no surname given). The Mormons Vital Records Index – British Isles shows a Grace GAUBERT marrying Joshua HIRST on 02.11.1727 at Almondbury,York.

In The Guildhall Library in London I found 'British Clockmakers & Watchmakers Apprentice Records 1710 - 1810 by Dennis Moore. It contains the record that on the 20th October 1737 Edward Gaubert, son of Peter Gaubert, of St Annes, Westminster, was apprenticed to Issac Philippon, master, of St. Martins in the Fields, watchmaker, for a consideration of £ 12. The normal term of apprenticeship was 7 years, beginning at 14 years of age and finishing when the apprentice reached 21 years of age. This suggests that Edward was therefore born in 1723 which means that his father Peter must have been born probably before 1700. The original record is at Kew under file no 15/122. This makes Edward highly likely as the father of our Peter who was born in 1748.

The IGI has 4 records of the Philippon family in London. Firstly, Isaac the son of Nicole & Susanne, was christened on the 18th July 1703 at Rider Court Huguenot Church. Next Ellisabet daughter of Nichollas, was born on 4th Dec 1704, and christened on 6th Dec 1704 at Glasshouse Street French Huguenot Church. Then came Isaac the son of Daniel & Mary, born on 20th Nov 1730 and christened on the 30th Nov 1730 at St Martins-in-the-Field. Lastly came the marriage of Samuel to Mary Ann Toucheron on the 21st May 1730 also at St Martins-in-the-Field. This shows that the Philippons were assimilated within the native English church within a generation. You will see that quite a few of the early Gauberts were also from St Anne's and some also used St Martins. The Westminster Poll Book of 1749, which only gave the names of the heads of households, has no trace of a Gaubert but on page 17 does record an Isaac Phillipon, of Porter Street, St Annes parish Westminster, dated Nov 3oth 1749.

In the City of Westminster Archives I found the volume of St Martins Fleet Marriages. These marriages were unusual in that they were conducted in the Fleet Prison, not the church because of the circumstances eg the bride being pregnant or the parents refusing permission. There is a record on 9th May 1751 for David Gaubert bachelor, occupation: dyer, marrying Sarah Jenings (note:single 'n'), spinster. David's name is also shown as Gobart and Gaubart . This couple must be the same David & Sarah, parents of Edward Stephen and Elizabeth, as shown at para 3.13 in the will of Stephen Gaubert.

From the records of St Paul's, Covent Garden I found an entry for the marriage on 17th November 1761 of Henry Eustic of the Parish of Saint Peter Le Poor, London; batchelor, to Mary Roberts of the Parish of St Paul, Covent Garden in the County of Middlesex; spinster, by licence of the Lord Bishop of London Richard Mason. The Witnesses were Barnard Gardner and Stephen Gaubert

Stephen also found a record at St. Annes (created from St Martins-in-the-fields in 1687) of a Peter GAUBERT who married an Ann Waight on 13.06.1768 at Westminster (since confirmed by IGI). Peter was from that parish and Ann was from St. Giles Cripplegate. Peter was born in 1748 so Edward would, by present standards, have been unlikely to be born later than 1728. However I do have a note from an unidentified source suggesting that an Edward was born on the 22nd. of an unknown month in 1704 and that he had died as a widower on 10.08.1791. This would have made this Edward 44 yrs old when his son Peter was born. It is presently looking much more likely that it is the Edward, son of Peter, who was apprenticed in 1737 to Isaac Phillipon that is the father of our Peter born in 1748.

The IGI records the christening on 13th Sept 1646 at St Bride's church off Fleet Street in London, of Mary Govbard, the daughter of Edward Govbard and that she died on 21st Sept 1646. I have found a record in Westminster archives in London of the christening of Edward Gobert (note surname spelling), son of Edward also at St Brides, Fleet Street, on 21.11.1647 (this is repeated in Addendum para 11).

Peter Gaubert, son of Edward/Edouard Gaubert

The earliest record yet found, below, of the present GAUBERTs is of Peter GAUBERT, the common ancestor of today's Gauberts. The record is from the French School in Westminster, London. It shows that he was the son of Edward GAUBERT, and born on the 17th December 1748 and baptised on the 24th.March 1757. The Huguenot Society presumed that his baptism coincided with him becoming a pupil at that school. I viewed the record yesterday, 23rd Feb 2010 at The Huguenot Society library at 140, Hampstead Road, London (just a few hundred yards from Euston Station).

The card is written and signed by ‘J.J. Majendie’ who was probably the pastor to the school. He became better-known as Rev. Dr. John James Majendie (1709-1783) the son of Andre de Majendie, a Huguenot, who left France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes and settled in Exeter in 1700. John James Majendie studied at Leyden before becoming pastor of the French Church of the Savoy and being ordained as a priest of the Church of England. In 1753 he married Elizabeth Prevost by whom he had three children, Henry William, Lewis and Susannah. From 1761 to 1769 he was preceptor to Queen Charlotte to whom he taught English. He was also a tutor to her sons, the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York. He was a prebendary of Salisbury Cathedral and a canon of Worcester from 1769. He subsequently served as domestic chaplain to the queen before being appointed a canon of Windsor in 1774. He retained his close contacts with the French refugee community.

The Westminster French Protestant Charity School was founded in 1747 specifically for the descendants of Huguenot refugees. Peter Gaubert was enrolled less than a year later. For a moment you can forget all the masses of information on this website - in that one brief sentence is proof enough to explain when and how the Gauberts came to be in England. The school aimed to give primary education to about 30 pupils, 1/2 boys, 1/2 girls. By the time of the Napoleonic wars it was faced by economic difficulties and restricted itself to the education of girls alone. The school survived into the twentieth century but closed in the 1920s.

The parish registers for St Andrews in Holborn are available to view on the web at ancestry.com. I've checked the burial registers from 1690 - 1739 but haven't found any Gaubert.

The Westminster Poll Book 1818 for the election of two representatives to parliament

I mention John Culme's book 'The Directory Of Gold & Silversmiths' that includes the reference - 'John James Edington was apprenticed in 1811 to Stephen Gaubert, goldsmith of 4, Litchfield Street . Soho and 17, Brewer Street, Soho (polls of 1796 & 1818)'.

I've checked the Westminster Poll Book of 1818 and the only Gaubert recorded (and only heads of households were recorded) was in the parish of St James where Stephen Gaubert of 17, Brewer Street, goldsmith, was recorded as voting for Sir Murray Maxwell.
